The Japanese American Citizens League of the Monterey Peninsula is pleased to announce a Bonsai demonstration by Mr. Katsumi Kinoshita, a well-respected California Master Bonsai instructor. Bonsai is the Japanese art of tree miniaturization. The demonstration will take place at the JACL Hall at 424 Adams Street in Monterey at 1:00 PM on Saturday August 5, 2023.
Mr. Kinoshita is renown in the Bonsai community for his unique expertise and has won many competitions for his exceptional skill and talent. Mr. Kinoshita has enjoyed sharing his passion of Bonsai with his many students of the Monterey Bonsai Club which launched in 1963. In addition to Monterey, he shares this passion with Bonsai clubs in Salinas, Santa Cruz, Watsonville, and Fresno.
Katsumi Kinoshita, Club sensei, will conduct a bonsai creation demonstration at 1:00 p.m. in which he will create a highly collectable bonsai in about an hour. Attendees not only observe the creation of the bonsai masterpiece. Kinoshita, bonsai master teacher of the Club for over 50 years, is also the sensei of the Salinas Bonsai Club and the Akatsuki Bonsai Club of Fresno. He recently won the Kazari Bonsai Display Competition at the Clark Center for Japanese Art and Culture and is recognized as a bonsai master by the Golden State Bonsai Federation (GSBF) and the Agricultural Society of Japan. He regularly conducts bonsai demonstrations at the Santa Cruz Bonsai Kai and the Watsonville Bonsai Club as well as shows put on by his member clubs.
Mr. Kinoshita is a recipient of the Consul General of Japan in San Francisco Commendation for distinguished achievement in contributing to mutual understanding and friendship between Japan and the California by sharing the cultural attributes of Bonsai and has also been recognized for his leadership in promoting the wonderful art of Bonsai by the Golden State Bonsai Federation.
Mr. Kinoshita immigrated to the U.S. from Japan in 1955, initially settling in Delano before settling in Monterey. He resides in Monterey with his wife, Atsuko who is an accomplished Sensei of Urasenke Tea Tradition.
