Hattori and the White Abalone

Please read this fascinating article from the Monterey Herald, A name nearly lost to time–Monterey resident discovered a new species, but he wasn’t credited.

In 1939, Roy Hattori was diving for abalone off the coast of Point Conception when he first discovered a white abalone. As the first to report a new species, the expectation was it would be named after him. It was not.
