Join us on May 2, Saturday as we celebrate 100 years of culture and history of the Monterey Peninsula Japanese American Citizens League Hall. This building was the heart of the pre-WWII Japanese Community on the Monterey Peninsula.
We will be showcasing Japanese martial arts, music, bonsai, ikebana and in the evening, a dance. Pull out your old saddle shoes for a 1930s-1950s swing dancing. The Heritage Center will be open all day during this special celebration. All events are free. See below for the schedule.
Street parking is 2 hours. There is free parking in the lot to the left of the JACL Hall.
100th Anniversary Celebration Schedule of Events:
- 9:00am-3:00pm – Heritage Museum open
- 9:45am – Shinsho Mugen Daiko (outside)
- 10:00am – Welcome by Arlington La Mica – JACL Chapter President, Welcome by dignitaries present
- 10:30am – Japanese School of the JACL Monterey Peninsula
Performing Arigato no Hana → Flowers of Gratitude and Ookina kabu → The Giant Turnip - 11:00am – Tim Thomas – JACL Board member, historian, Curator of the Heritage Museum
- 11:15am – Nihon Buyo – Traditional Japanese Dance – Nathan Grijalva performing Fuji which means Wisteria.
- 11:30am – Koto – Michael Hattori performing 2 pieces, “Rokudan no Shirabe” and “Ainu no Ko no Odori
- 12:00pm – Monterey Bonsai Club
- 12:30pm – Lunch on your own. Snacks and drinks available
- 1:00pm – Ikebana International Monterey Bay Chapter #231
- 1:30pm – Salinas Kendo Dojo
- 2:00pm – Shorinji Kempo Monterey
- 2:30pm – Shinsho Mugen Daiko (taiko drumming)
- 7:00-9:00pm – Swing Dance – Moon Glow Jazz Band with Cannery Row Jump
